Employee motivation with the help of scents

More than 3,000 years ago, fragrances were already used in Chinese temples to pay homage to the gods and to give the room a special atmosphere. Even today, fragrances are often used to emphasize a special mood and give even large offices or shopping venues the desired effect.

A scent has a direct influence on whether we feel comfortable or not. Well-being and discomfort, rejection or approval, purchase or not, all these decisions can be subconsciously controlled by scents. A study by the University of Paderborn confirmed as early as 1998 that customers spend significantly longer in business premises if they are scented. In addition also the conversion rose by equal six per cent, in relation to areas in those no smell materials were used.

The world of fragrances

The problem with this survey is that it can not be individualized. Depending on the desired effect and the person, the effect of a fragrance can be quite different. What one person likes, another may literally not be able to smell at all. This is especially true for fragrances that are very present in the room. Here is worthwhile in advance a brief overview of the differences in this segment.

When using should be primarily natural fragrances, such as essential oils. These are obtained from seeds, needles, leaves, roots, bark, twigs, fruits, flowers and the like. Every thing in nature has a scent, some smells strongly, some only very subtly, and everything is associated with an effect. From flowers and leaves can be obtained liquid substances that volatilize. The longer they are in the air, the more they dissolve and are often no longer perceptible after a short time. The speed at which this happens divides fragrances into different effective circles, which experts describe as heart note, top note and base note. In the heart note, fragrances need about 30 minutes for their full effect to unfold. Accordingly, they remain in the air for a long time and are often still clearly smellable after hours. This is not the case with top notes, they remain at most half an hour and are then already gone. Base notes are the most effective. These need about two hours before they unfold completely. In return, they remain in the air for up to 24 hours and then only slowly fade away. Anyone who uses fragrances should have this basic knowledge in order to plan their use precisely.

Using fragrances as a marketing strategy

It is important not to overdo it. Optimal are fragrance inserts that are not even consciously perceptible, but creep more into the subconscious. This lures the customer, for example, in stores unconsciously to buy without noticing it. Here the chance is also smaller that someone reacts rejecting to the effect, because it can cause neither headache nor other uneasiness. If you are unsure, ask proven experts for advice so that you can plan your marketing and avoid any nasty surprises. And yes, scents are part of an advertising strategy, a concept of employee motivation and so much more. If you use them correctly…

Where does which fragrance belong?

For optimal use, it is first important to decide which rooms are actually to be scented? In the bathroom, for example, vanilla, lavender, algae, rose, sea buckthorn and juniper are ideal, because they convey a sense of well-being and have a real wellness character. In kitchens, on the other hand, it should smell appetizing. Rosemary, coffee, curry and thyme have proven themselves here. In the living room, it may smell pleasantly of citrus fruits, while children’s rooms and bedrooms benefit from honey, vanilla or neroli. This is said to promote relaxation and counteract a peaceful sleep. In the office, on the other hand, wood scents are the measure of all things, because these are not only appreciated by employees because they can create a natural oasis of well-being, but also because they promote concentration and thus help to avoid mistakes.
